Life is unsure; Eat your dessert first

So. Self-confidence.

Have you noticed that suddenly celebrities are taking a huge interest in the self-confidence of us teens? This is great! Finally, someone who understands.

Only problem is, they've got it all wrong. This self-confidence that they are promoting isn't the kind that we want. I want the kind of confidence that will help me to be better, to have the courage to do what is right.

The kind of self-confidence they are encouraging is the reassurance that when you are doing something wrong, you really aren't.

What a tasty paradox!
They take these messed up people and tell them that there is nothing wrong with them *cough cough "self-confidence" cough cough* but rather that there is everything wrong with the world and-here is the keyword- morality.
They think that if they can convince these people that they aren't wrong, that morality is wrong, then they are suddenly very ok with themselves again. See, we know when we have done something wrong, and it eats us up inside. There is no getting away with it, unless we can delude ourselves into thinking that we are right and the accepted morals of the world are wrong.

Ok, now it's time to open up the floor and let you guys talk amongst yourselves.

Self confidence: Helpful characteristic, or sinister plot? ^_^

  1. Ooh! I absolutely agree with you.
The more we encourage this kind of self-confidence, the faster the standards of the world plummit.

  2. Very intelectual, sarah! almost as deep and thought provoking as my last post :)I think that it is excruciatingly ironic that while true self-confidence is founded upon moral truths and standards, this false self-confidence is fabricated by pretending that these morals and standards do not exhist.

  3. I think we shouldn't have confidence in ourselves, but have confidence in the Lord. We need to be humble and remember that God can help us through all things. What we believe ourselves to be capable of are actually blessings from him. He gave us the power to be strong and create and do things. All this self-confidence mumbo-jumbo is just man believing he has done everything on his own, without God's help. We don't need that. We need trust in our Heavenly Father.

    Very wise post, Sarah. :)

  4. ^_^ I wrote this in about 5 minutes. Rereading it, it's very choppy. =/ Oh well! And after further thinking, I believe that what we are going for would be our yw value, individual worth. And I really wrote this in response to Katy Perry's video for 'Fireworks'. It had a bunch of homosexuals making out in it and she was trying to tell them that they were good, and that we were bad. I couldn't figure out a nice way to put that in there, so I left it out. Until now! ^_^

  5. hehe, well, it takes talent to write something this awesome in 5 minutes!

And I think you're right about Individual Worth. But I don't think that's the same as the "self-confidence" you were talking about. The worth of souls is great. You should feel good about yourself. But for the right reasons. Not because some celebrity tells you everything you do is okay.

...sick. I don't watch music videos for this, and many other reasons. >:P

  7. You're right, it is definitely not the same. John Bytheway talked about the difference between self-worth and self-confindence. It was an awesome talk. You should listen to it, Narnia. BTW, we missed you in Seminary today!
